Great Northern ore train at Minneapolis MN Union Yard in 1967. |
Description: |
The Great Northern ran a few ore trains from the mines in Northern MN near Duluth down to Minneapolis MN and then transfered the trains to the CB&Q in St Paul MN. The CB&Q would run them to Chicago. Most of the GN ore was sent to ore docks near Duluth by ore boat. The BNSF still runs a few direct ore trains from Duluth to Chicago by rail. GN Union Yard in Mpls MN near the University of MN was their main yard on the east end of the System. It was as big as Northtown yard at one time. The CNW and CGW had large yards here also. |

GN 309A |
Description: |
Going west from St Paul and Westminister tower the Great Northern had a four track main line on which both the Chicago Great Western and the Chicago North Western also ran between St Paul and Minneapolis!!! At St Anthony Tower the freight mains entered the east end of Union Yard crossing over the Passenger mains on four crossing diamonds as the Passenger mains headed west thru the University of Minnesota and then crossed the Mississippi River on the Stone Arch Bridge which i believe had a curve in it on the west end going into the Passenger Station!!! West of the GN Union Yard and the Minnesota Transfer which connected with the Milwaukee Road was Minneapolis Jct which was south of the Soo Line at Shoreham and the NP at Northtown--- this is all to say that there was a lot of railroading in not really a lot of space!!! At Mpls Jct was engine GN 309A--- but as you can see from the GE U Boat on the right and the "Big Sky Blue" engine on the left--- change was coming like it or not it!!! |

GN #364C & #350B |
Description: |
Southbound Seattle-Portland train #460 is pulling out of Tacoma's Union Station, with F7A #364C and rebuilt F7B #350B. On this day, #460 has at least 9 cars, the last of which is a NP lightweight. The GN storage mail appears to be from the #239-#241 series, and I belive it is #239. The first 3 coaches/chairs are from the #950-#979 series built by B&S in 1914 as #4500-#4529. The first is one of several from this series which were streamlined and switched from a coach to a chair configuration, the next 2 are of the modified variety with A/C installed in the mid-1930's, no way to tell without knowing the car number if these are coaches or chairs. The #364C was built in October 1950 and was later BN #9728. BN sold the engine to Precision National in November 1974. The #350B was built in November 1947, originally as a F3B, and was rebuilt after a wreck as a F7B with the same number, outshopped on June 22nd, 1952. F3A #350A was also rebuilt to a F7A after that wreck. The #350B was later BN #9701, and was sold in March 1974 to Simon & Sons. Scanned with an Epson V550 from a Kodachrome duplicate 35mm slide. Date is approximate. Photographer is unknown. |

GN F7 444D |
Description: |
GN F7 444D hauling westbound at Naperville, Illinois on April 14, 1962, photo by Chuck Zeiler. I received the following from Karl Rethwisch, a retired CB&Q Engineer. The GN power mentioned was always on #'s 97 and 88. This was the result of an agreement whereby Q E units would run through to Havre, MT. on #31 rather than change engines at St. Paul. In exchange, #88 would continue on to Clyde with GN power that would turn and become 97's power the next day, or as soon as Clyde Diesel shop could resuscitate them. This was the classic JUNK power of the decade !!! Few trips on either train were completed without at least one catastrophic engine failure and, usually, MORE than one. On one memorable trip Charlie Wright and Art Krahn were commin' over So. River St. on 88 when everything went ta ****. Seems the pilot of their lead unit fell off the engine and they, of course, ran over it. While runnin' over the pilot they fell off the tracks and nearly ended up in the river. Some readers may remember a massive derailment that resulted in freight cars hangin' off the bridge over River St. and cattle roamin' the streets on the south end of Aurora. The stock cars were supposed to be set out on the Sheep Yard lead but never quite made it. These exchange units remained on 88/97 'till the boys at Clyde got 'em runnin' again. When that happened they were replaced with a different bunch of units that were in the same shape as the previous set. I have had sets of these beasts on one of those two trains that had units that had blown up but were left in the consist for months. Rusty, oil covered walkways, piles of sand in the engine room and inspection covers everywhere. THESE were the GN engines we had to put up with in the 60's. I hope this helps explain the presence of GN units in the 60's Chuck. |
