Album Info:BNSF's Seattle Sub is one of the most interesting rail lines in the US. It is an important corridor for freight and passengers heading to and from the Pacific Northwest. From Seattle, trains to Tacoma, Vancouver, Pasco, Portland, Eugene, Sacramento, Oakland, Fresno, and Los Angeles must use the Seattle Sub on the first leg of their journey. The line runs from the King Street Station in downtown Seattle to Portland, Oregon. The scenery on the line is very picturesque, with urban settings, high-speed trains, rural countrysides, and moderate grades all present on this line. Trains that use the line usually originate or terminate at BNSF or Union Pacific yards in Seattle, South Seattle, Auburn, Tacoma, Kalama, and Kelso. While BNSF owns the line, Union Pacific has trackage rights over the whole line from their Argo Yard in Seattle to Portland. Along with upwards of 30 freight trains per day, dozens of passenger trains use the line as well. Sound Transit operates Sounder commuter trains between Seattle and Lakewood, and Amtrak Cascades and Coast Starlight trains use the entirety of the line on their runs to Eugene and Los Angeles respectively. Description:  Amtrak 470 rolls along with a southbound Amtrak Cascades train just north of Woodland. 470 was built in 1998 as part of an order for 20 units for both the Pacific Surfliner and Cascades services. The F59s were retired by Amtrak in the late 2010s, and this unit, along wiht several of its sisters, were sold to Chicagos Metra, where it is now numberd 93. Still frame from original video.

#11 Leaves The Emerald City
Title:  #11 Leaves The Emerald City
Description:  P42DC 10 leads the southbound Coast Starlight through Control Point Tukwila on a cloudy morning in June. Control Point Tukwila is where the BNSF and Union Pacific Seattle mainlines converge for the final 7 miles into downtown. The control point is viewable from two points, an area south of the junction where Monster Road parallels the tracks for around 400 feet, and from a walking trail across the Green River from the tracks. Other than a few pesky thorny bushes, the trail is peaceful area to photograph. We set up here at 10:03 for the Starlight to pass, running right on time after departing King Street Station just 8 miles north.

Title:  GEVO Leads South
Description:  BNSF 7321 leads a southbound intermodal through Tukwila. The south end of the South Seattle yard is just a mile and a half north of here. The 7321 is a General Electric ES44DC built in 2009. Just peeking out from behind the trees is the second unit, ET44C4 3770.

Description:  BNSF 3770 is the second unit on a southbound intermodal train departing South Seattle on BNSFs Seattle Sub. Leading the train is ES44DC 7321. 3770 is an ET44C4, an ES44C4 that meets Tier 4 Emission standards. BNSF owns 325 of these engines, numbered in the 3675-3999 series.

Title:  NPCU In The Lead
Description:  Amtrak 90250 leads a southbound Cascades service into Tukwila station. 90250 was built in 1977 as an F40PHR, using parts from trade-in SDP40Fs. When the F40s were bumped from mainline duties by GE Genesis locomotives, this unit was rebuilt without and engine as an Non-powered control unit (NPCU). This unit has been assigned to the Amtrak Cascades service for several years at this point, and is leading a set of Horizon cars today.

Description:  Sound Transit 904 leads a southbound Sounder into the station at Tukwila. 904 is an F59PHI, built in 2000 by EMD. For a period of about six years, this unit and one other were leased to Virginia Railway Express to tide over an equipment shortage. With the arrival of new MPI units, the EMDs were returned, and now shuttle commuters along Puget Sound between Everett, Seattle, and Tacoma.

Description:  BNSF 7098 leads a manifest freight northbound through Tukwila. The mixed freight is making about 40 MPH as it flies through on the center main. The consist is an interesting one; The ES44C4 is leading a Warbonnet Dash-9, and two SD75 variants. After seeing over a dozen trains over the course of the day, this was a perfect way to close out the evening. The sunset reflects off the orange of the BNSF units as they near the end of their journey. BNSF 7098 was built by GE in 2012.

Description:  BNSF 647 is the second unit on a northbound manifest freight passing Tukwila. The C44-9W is still painted in the colors of BNSF's predecessor, Santa Fe. When BNSF was created, its paint scheme was partially derives from Santa Fe's corporate image. Elements such as the cigar band stripe on the front of the Warbonnet can also be found on the rear of the H3 GEVO in front of it. 647 was built for the Santa Fe in 1994, one of the last engines built built before the merger.

Description:  BNSF 255 is the third unit on a northbound manifest freight passing the Tukwila Sounder station. 255 is an SD75M, one of 76 ever built. 51 of these units were built for BNSF-predecessor Santa Fe, while the remaining 25 were given directly to BNSF after the 1995 ATSF/BN merger. All of the original Santa Fe units were sold to PRLX or Norfolk Southern, making 255 one of only 25 SD75Ms still on the BNSF roster.
