PRR 5898, EP-22, 1965 |
Description: |
Excursion. Here is an original telephoto view I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train about to enter Frankstown, Pennsylvania, on 17 October 1965. Shown here are four PRR passenger engines. The lead locomotive is #5898, an EP-22 built by EMD in 1951 and rated at 2,250 horsepower. All four engines are of the same model and vintage, so there's 9,000 head-end horsepower at work here. They are pulling the very first "Horseshoe Curve Excursion" sponsored by the Lancaster Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. The West Branch of the Juniata River is visible at the lower right. |

C630 no. 6761 may be whitelined, but unlike its roster mates, it's not being chopped up into razor blades. Instead, it has been acquired by the Reading Company Technical & Historical Society, who will restore it back to its original green and yellow livery with loco no. 5308. Note also the Tuscan Pennsy E-unit in the background. Unknown photographer, from the Ralph L. Phillips collection of the Bay State Model Railroad Museum. |

Hard to catch |
Description: |
But it wasnt easy!! In October 1987, Western NY NRHS ran a couple of circle trips from Buffalo through Rochester on the CR Chicago Line, down to Corning on the Corning Secondary, then back to Buffalo on the Southern Tier. I caught the Oct 17 trip out of Corning, and chased down the Canisteo River. The Es did what they do best-about 70 MPH-and I was doing 75 along River Rd from Addison, along with three other lunatics. The only thing that saved us is that the police presence down there was almost nil at the time-in 20 years of running that road, I think I saw a sheriffs car one time. We were cooking. I finally got ahead of the train at Carson, yielding this shot. |

Description: |
Here is page 29 of a 43-page article by James J.D. Lynch, Jr., entitled "Overview Of The History And Development Of The Pennsylvania Railroad's Altoona Shops." It was published originally in the Autumn 1996 issue of "Keystone" magazine, page 46. Bottom Photo: Shown here are PRR engines #5898 and three other "E" units whose numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD. #5898 is an EP-22 built in 1951 and rated at 2,250 horsepower. Middle Photo: Shown here are PRR engines #8610 and another unit whose number is not recorded. Both were built by the American Locomotive Company. #8610 is an APS-24MS built in 1956 and rated at 2,400 horsepower. These units are actually the rear-end "pushers" for the mail-express train pictured in the bottom photo. |

PRR 5898 - St. Louis Iron Mountain & Southern |
Description: |
This is the 5898's good side, the one with the pinstripes. I really hope they can repaint this sometime, it's a shame to see something with the potential to look so nice, look so horrible. |
