Beautiful photo by Glenn Pfleghar of the massive 1924 Alco-Schenectady 2-8-8-2 Chesapeake- type locomotive in the Clifton Forge, VA, yard. Often called "Simons" by the C&O (short for "Simple Simon"), these locos operated as simple-expansion articulateds, unlike the earlier compound Mallets. Specifics - H-7 class, 57" drivers, 215 psi boiler pressure, 23x32" cylinders, engine weight of 567,500 lb, impressive tractive effort of 108,547 lb. .
