NPS "Special History Study," Title Page, 1989
Here is the title page of a 156-page monograph entitled "A Special History Study; Pennsylvania Railroad Shops And Works; Altoona, Pennsylvania." The study was written by Dr. John C. Paige, and published by the United States Department of the Interior's National Park Service during May of 1989. Prominent here in the Pennsylvania Railroad's Erecting & Machine Shop is engine #4528, an I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S in August of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in January of 1942, and retired in February of 1958 after 35 years of faithful service. Lurking in its shadow is PRR engine #5923, an ES-10 diesel-electric locomotive built by GM-EMD in October of 1947 and rated at 1,000 horsepower. Photo courtesy of the Altoona Area Public Library.
