903 Enters Gilroy
The crew of Caltrain 903 waves as the engine rumbles into Gilroy. Caltrain 903 is the third of 20 F40PH-2s the state of California purchased in 1985 for Peninsula Commute service, and one of 5 units that retained a gear-driven HEP system when the fleet was overhauled in the late 90s. According to various sources, 903 has been renown for its spotty mechanical history, and was even reported as retired by some sources. However, 903 is clearly still alive and kicking as of August, although its days are numbered with the inevitable influx of new equipment.
