PRR Erecting & Machine Shop, #4 of 10, c. 1953
Here is the fourth of ten original photos by Douglas C. Jones that were taken in the Juniata section of Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1953. Shown here is a portion of the storage yard at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Erecting & Machine Shop. The central section of the Shop is visible in the background. Partially visible in the center is PRR engine #436, a B-8A (0-6-0) Shop Switcher built in Juniata as a B-8 during August of 1912, rebuilt as a B-8A tank engine in June of 1924, and retired in October of 1956 after 44 years of faithful service. To its right is an unidentified "AF" Class diesel-electric locomotive awaiting repairs. In the foreground are numerous high-grade steel steam locomotive driving wheels, tires, and axles ~ most of which will never be installed.
