IC E9A 2021 |
Description: |
Illinois Central E9A 2021 was on the service track at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal with E9B 2100. The locomotives had come in that morning on the PANAMA LIMITED and would head back north at 4:15PM. With the beginning of Amtrak on 1 May, this train was discontinued and left for the very last time exactly three weeks after this photo was taken. The 2021 had been built as IC E8 4029 in May 1952 and was upgraded into an E9 in February 1969. It would be sold to Amtrak as the 436 in February 1973, and it was the only IC E-unit purchased by Amtrak. It was retired in 1981, sold to Precision National Corp. in May 1982 and subsequently scrapped. |

Illinois Central #3 "The Louisiane" |
Description: |
Illinois Central #3 "The Louisiane" heads through Sardis on a hot summer morning in 1952. E8(A) #4018 was about two years old, having arrived 6/1950. It was the lowest #d E8 on the IC and was scrapped by Amtrak about 1980. Sardis, an hour from Memphis, TN, is home to Sardis Lake and Sardis Dam, which at the time was the largest earth-filled dam in the world. "The Louisiane" was one of IC's secondary trains, operating with standard heavy-weight cars, but still offered Pullman and dining service. It ran on the Chicago-New Orleans Main Line and would have hit Sardis at 9:14 AM. |

IC E8 4022 |
Description: |
IC E8 4022 southbound at about 22nd Street, Chicago, Illinois, October 14, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in April 1951 (c/n 14083) on EMD Order 2037, it eventually was leased to Amtrak retaining road number 4022, scrapped during 1980. Thanks to Bob Lalich, I can identify the embankment. It is seen here on the "jumpover" tracks leading south out of Central Station. Rather than have interlocking to cross the IC's passenger trains over the Electric Division's tracks, the IC built an earthen hill that lifted trains over. The Electric Division's tracks can be see (somewhat) in the lower left, crossing under this train and will be on the other side. |

ICG E-UNITS |
Description: |
Illinois Central E8A 4023, E9B 4108 and E8A 4022 sit on a ready track at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal, and will depart shortly on Amtrak's PANAMA LIMITED. Trailing unit 4022 was one of at least six IC E-units that were repainted in Amtrak colors while on lease to the national carrier until the delivery of new SDP40F units later in 1974. Amtrak leased these units from IC and then ICG units because they were equipped with Automatic Train Control for use in ATC territory between Champaign and Centralia. |
