Kingsland Passengers |
Description: |
A morning that started sunny and somewhat warm quickly turned cloudy and chilly. Passengers waiting to escape the cold air watch as a 49-year old ex-CNJ GP40P leads their train into the station. The rail in the platform below are some of the remains of the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western's Kingsland Wye. At one point these old buried rails routinely saw local freight trains and shop moves from the Kingsland Car Shops run across the platform. Trash trains to North Arlington in the '80s to the early '90s were the last regular run through traffic to polish these old strings of steel. Today the track is mostly forgotten except for occasional MoW equipment storage. |

Rebuild Leader at Plank |
Description: |
One of NJ Transit's 13 ex-CNJ GP40Ps leads Train #1630 east on the Pascack Valley Line. The locomotive is one of a handful of these thirteen 49-year old veterans to have been overhauled for non-revenue service. Thanks to a shortage of cab cars some of them have made a brief return to passenger service until more cabs are released from the PTC program. |

Behind Hudson Tower |
Description: |
NJ Transit's Central Railroad of New Jersey heritage locomotive leads Train #807 west behind the Pennsylvania Railroad's Hudson Tower on Lackawanna rails. Back in 1968 when the 4109 was CNJ 3677 it was no stranger to this neighborhood. The only difference being it would be on the other side of Hudson Tower. Since the CNJ's GP40P never made it to their waterfront terminal (cut off by the Aldene Plan) they only ever used the Pennsylvania Railroad's Newark Penn Station as their final stop. After the trains were cleared they would venture just a bit further east to Harrison where they would clear up the PRR's Hudson Yard to prepare for the return trip to Raritan or Bay Head. |

The Veterans of the Rails |
Description: |
Two examples from NJ Transit's once large fleet of GP40 rebuilds sit side-by-side on 2 Depot at Hoboken Terminal. The two engines were both born in LaGrange, IL in October of 1968. One a GP40P for the CNJ, the other a GP40 for the Penn Central. The came together on the same roster following heavy rebuilds in the mid-90s at the Juniata Locomotive Shops. Rebuilds that made them look nearly identical until 2019 when the 4109 received its CNJ heritage paint. |

A Dirty Shade of Blue |
Description: |
Its been just over a year since NJ Transit revealed their three heritage tribute locomotives back in October of 2019. While the two ALPs were decaled tributes to the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Erie Lackawanna the GP40 selected was one of actual Central Railroad of New Jersey heritage. Since the sunny afternoon when it rolled out of the MMC engine house with all details applied its once shiney fresh blue paint has picked up a fine coat of road grime. Upon its release it was highly criticized by a handful of buffs, foamers and historians alike claiming the slightly metallic paint was too bright and "the wrong shade of blue!" Nobody behind the project at NJ Transit intended for the 4109 to be a perfectly accurate historic restoration. The engine has gone through so many physical alterations over its 52-year career that even if the color was 100% perfect the physical details would still be wrong to the bolt counters. In the end the engine was a pretty impressive project that surprised a lot of people. It was completed on a small budget with limited resources and handful of dedicated employees over the course of two weeks. |

Licking the Wounds |
Description: |
On a sunny Friday morning Train #6611 arrives at Dover Station while mechanical forces address some mild damage to the 4110 from an incident the night before. About 12 hours earlier the 4110 was returning home to Dover on YD-43 with a handful of equipment from the MMC when they hit a stalled car carrier truck stranded over Station Road crossing at Mount Tabor station. Thankfully no serious injuries came of the incident to both crew and the public. The following morning as the rush neared its end the engine was spotted at the east end of S-6 in Dover Yard to place it close to the yards machine shop. Mechanical forces spent the better part of the morning welding the rear pilot of the 52-year old ex-CNJ veteran to make her roadworthy again. |

Passenger and Industrial |
Description: |
An eastbound Bergen County Line local to Hoboken arrives at Wesmont Station rounding the curve at Curtis Wright. The train is lead by one of 13 ex-CNJ GP40Ps (one of six sets like this on the Hoboken Division). The train passes through the industrial landscape of Wallington and Wood-Ridge. This area was at one point one of North Jersey's industrial strongholds with the massive Curtis Wright complex being one of the major manufacturing sites for the war effort during the second World War. Today much of these industrial properties have either been converted to warehouses or have been cleared to make way for retail and townhouses. The Farmland Dairy facility to the left of the scene was one of the more recent facilities to close its doors in December of 2013 resulting in the loss of over 300 North Jersey jobs. What the future holds in store for the vast property is uncertain but it wouldn't come as a surprise to learn of expanded retail and residential construction. |

Montclair Connection |
Description: |
An eastbound train rounds the tight curves of a small section of track built between 1999 and 2002 known as the Montclair Connection. This short section of track was first proposed long ago by the then-competing Erie and Delaware, Lackawanna & Western railroads as a way for the Erie to detour trains from their New York & Greenwood Lake division over the DL&W's Montclair Branch as a result of regular flooding issues the Erie used to face in the meadows between Kearny and Jersey City. As time went on and the Erie and DL&W began to consolidate their operations the possibility of the project being executed was revisited a few times. In the early '60s shortly after the merger of the Erie and DL&W the project was considered once again as a way to consolidate the NY&GL and the Montclair Branch as one route a result of a larger series of re-route projects the new Erie Lackawanna was considering all across North Jersey. The project was shelved though when the affects of the Interstate 80 and Passaic Reroute projects resulted in heavy freight traffic being diverted from the DL&Ws original Boonton Line between Secaucus and Paterson to the Erie's original New York & Greenwood Lake from Jersey City to Wayne. These projects also resulted in the NY&GL being renamed to the Boonton Line. For another 25 years or so the project sat dormant until it was once again revisited by NJ Transit in the 1980s. Around this same time NJ Transit was in the process of closing the original DL&W Montclair Terminal and replaced the historic 6-track terminal with a less-than-stellar single track station near Bay Street. What was significant about this short new alignment was instead of following the historic route towards the old terminal it instead curved away towards the Boonton Line as a way to setup for the possibility of executing the Montclair Connection project proposed so many years before. The late '90s saw negotiations start between NJ Transit and the town of Montclair over land acquisition between Glen Ridge Avenue and Pine Street. The project would require Grant Street and Sherman Avenue to be severed in order to dig out a small cut and a handful of local businesses and homes to be acquired through eminent domain. Demolition and construction began in 1999 with the project wrapping up in September 2002. Monday, September 30 saw the first revenue trains to pass through the new 1,000ft electrified connection. With the electrification being extended from Bay Street Station to Montclair State University the new "Montclair Line" was now part of the NJ Transit's MidTown Direct service bringing direct access to Penn Station New York to another section of the railroad. As a result of this connection the former alignment of the Boonton Line between Pine Street in Montclair to West End interlocking in Jersey City was abandoned by NJ Transit. Rights were not maintained to operate over the line with Norfolk Southern (previously Conrail) who owned this section of the Boonton Line. Two drawbridges in Kearny over the Passaic and Hackensack rivers were in desperate need of heavy repair or replacement and NJ Transit claimed that the ridership levels did not justify any continued operations. The track became known officially as the Orange Running Track was was served by local NS freight trains until about early 2008. |

Garbage Train |
Description: |
A westbound passing through Rutherford with a complete set of Comet IB "ComArrows." These oddball rebuilds werent exactly the definition of a quality rebuild but were a cheat answer to a capacity issue back when they were pull from mothball storage. The entire fleet would be retired by 2008 with nearly half the fleet still surviving in passenger service on Amtrak Californias San Joaquin route. The surviving cars have been extensively rebuilt. The cab car pictured here still survives today as CDTX 5010 "The Golden Gate." |
