NS 2-6-0 #117 - Norfolk & Southern |
Description: |
The note on the back probably written by Warren W McCleary Jr (photographer) reads, "Engine No. 117 of the Norfolk Southern Railroad taken in norfolk yard in Sept. 1935." As a side note, its sister #116 was the last 2-6-0 configuration to be retired in 1941. Interesting boiler on the flatbed behind the loco. Note the missing tender so it's probably sitting in a scrap line. |

MEC 249 |
Description: |
Back in the days when taking a photograph was an event!!! 60lb rail? Is that a '94' hanging in front of the head lamp?? Train 94 must be a freight as it isn't in any of my Passenger time tables for the pre-WWI teens. The car behind the tender looks like a freight load... /DL Maine Central 249 was built by Baldwin in August 1897 as a Vulclain compound for the Rumford Falls & Buckfield RR as #3, became Rumford Falls and Rangeley Lakes 2nd #3 later in 1897, coverted to simple in September 1903 and became Portland & Rumford Falls #54, became MEC 249 in 1907, scrapped in June 1916. |

SP (T&NO) 2-6-0 463 |
Description: |
Southern Pacific 2-6-0 463 (second) was working at AVONDALE YARD, just west of New Orleans, coupled to a Harriman Common Standard passenger car. The Mogul had been built by Baldwin in 1912 as the 503, in the 500-514 group. It was rebuilt at the Algiers Shops in New Orleans in 1931, renumbered 688 (second) in 1949 and then 463 (second) in 1950. This loco was a real survivor, outlasting all of its siblings and most of the other steam locomotives on the T&NO. It was finally sold for scrap on 7 January 1957. |

Description: |
This Mogul was one of a gsoup of 15 2-6-0's built by Baldwin in June 1912 as Southern Pacific Lines 500-514. In December 1949, the entire group was renumbered 685-699; and in May 1950 they were renumbered again, to 460-474. Here at ALGIERS YARD, the 468 shows evidence of its most recent renumbering. All of these locomotives lasted for at least 40 years, being retired between June 1952 and January 1957. This loco was sold to Houston Compressed Steel on 2 February 1955. (approximate date) |
