This appears to be a reprint from the 1940-50's era of a 1915 photograph possibly done by K.E. Schlachter of a 1915 photograph. The locomotive was built in 1900 by the Manchester Locomotive Works just before the formation of the American Locomotive Works (Alco). This American-type locomoitve was originally numbered 633. This loco was used most often in suburban service out of Boston's North Station. Specifics - class A-41, 69" drivers, 18x24" cylinders, respectable 190 psi boiler pressure, 18,200 lb tractive effort, engine weight of 115.00 lbs. |

The Manchester Locomotive Works built this American style locomotive sometime between 1900-11. It was an A-41 class unit with 69" drivers and 190 psi boiler pressure. No date was listed so it's a "guess-timation". Thanks to Stu Nicholson and espeically David Hutchinson, the location has been identified as the East Somersville roundhouse near Sullivan Square. With B&M 4-4-0 #1029 missing its headlight, number boards, rods and bell, the loco must be on its way to the scrapper's torch. Built in 1911 by Alco-Manchester, the loco was the last of the A-41 class to be built. These 4-4-0's were used primarily in suburban service but #1029 only got a chance to serve 22 years. When absorbed by the Southern in 1894, it retained its original number for a while, but then was renumbered 848 and soon 1854 (both in 1903) and ultimately 3854 in 1907. "Mike Brady" on cab in honor of the engineer who gave 50 years of service. No photographer was listed. |

This little 4-4-0 American type loco was built by Schenectady in April 1895 as CCC&StL 192, renumbered to NYCL 7128 in 1905, to LEW 4158 in 1907, Rebuilt at Collinwood in March 1918 equipped with superheater, retired in August 1923.. Here it is with a full tender of coal and steam up ready to head up a varnish consist. Only the year and location were listed on the back of this very old reprint. No photographer was listed. |
