NYC 4-8-2 #2780 - New York Central |
Description: |
This powerful 4-8-2 locomotive was built by ALCo-Schenectady in April of 1926 as NYC #2780 (serial #66658). NYC called the 4-8-2 wheel configuration a "Mohawk" instead of the traditional label "Mountain" as they advertised their "Water Level Route" and thought it inappropriate for a "Mountain" loco to be used. The loco served for 27 years befor it was retired in March of 1953 and sold for scrap in April of the same year. Specs - 69" drivers, 225 psi boiler pressure, 27x30" cylinders, engine weight of 362,500 lb, tractive effort of 60,620 with a booster addition of 12,660 lb. The photo is from the Howard W. Ameling collection. |
