Viewing Album: NS"ex CofGA Greenville Branch Pictures
By:
Hank Stephens
Dates:
6/6/2003 - 6/6/2003
Album Info:
The former CofGa line from Newnan (Raymon—(, GA to Columbus, GA was once the stomping grounds of the famed Central of Georgia Man O' War - an intrastate train operating between Atlanta (Terminal Station) and Columbus. When CofGA and Southern merged, these lesser known passenger trains slowly disappeared and many of their routes like theGreenville line became a truncated branch by the late 70s-early 80s. A Georgia Pacific plywood plant at Durand, GA, quarries at Fortson, GA and a Mead sawmill at Greenville were the main industries by this time, with a little pulpwood to boot. By the 90s, the line was down to G-P, Mead and a single woodyard at the end of the line north of Greenville called Allie. The line was switched by a turn out of Columbus Yard in Columbus, GA and these photos document a typical movement over the line in its last few years of operation. Georgia Southwestern RR (GSWR) tried to make a go of the line for a couple of years but it finally succombed to abandonment in the first decade of the 2000s. It was typical of the backwoods pulp and timber branches that once criss-crossed the south, but whose time eventually ran out due to consolidated operations, the end of stick length pulpwood and a grab by CSX for most of the G-P mill traffic
