ERIE Inspection Car #8440 - Erie Mining Company |
Description: |
The hy-rail inspection car must have been a hit back in 1957 when it started its travels on the mainline for the Erie Mining Company. The original color was a light blue or blueish green but repainted to the bright yellow in the early 1960's. It was donated the the Lake Superior RR Museum in 1975 and was driven down the DMIR tracks to the museum by the then-museum President Donald B. Shank. |

NP Rotary Snow Plow #2 - Northern Pacific |
Description: |
With its blades painted red and its housing in black, the Northern Pacific steam powered rotary snow plow is an arresting sight at the Lake Superior RR Museum. Built in 1887 by the Cooke Locomotive Works, it cleared the snow clogged tracks up and down the NP mainline. This may be the oldest steam-driven rotary snow plow in the US. The museum purchased it from a railroad historical society in 1975. |

NP Wedge Show Plow #19 - Northern Pacific |
Description: |
Another Northern Pacific snow plow shares the stage with NP plow #2. This one is a Russell wedge snow plow built in 1907 by the Russell Snow Plow Company. Several locomotives working together would push the wedge plow into the mounds of snow. Speeds of nearly 50 mph were often used to burst through the clogged tracks. It was retired in the 1960's and donated to the Lake Superior RR Museum. |

Snow Plows on Display |
Description: |
Northern Pacific's Russell wedge snow plow #19 (left) shares the spotlight with NP's steam-driven rotary snow plow. Both were instrumental during their service years of keeping the snow clogged tracks open for business. Nice to see the two of them together at the Lake Superior RR Museum. |
