Album Info:Here are 14 photos by H.W. Pontin that were taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, during July of 1940 All of them are from the John S. Fisher Collection, and all were purchased as part of a single eBay auction conducted by Mr. Allan Fisher on 07 May 2022. The road number is cited when possible. Some of these photos were used in Harry T. Sohlberg's article entitled "Horseshoe Curve" that was published in the March 1941 issue of "Trains" magazine, pages 28-35.

Description:  Here is a photo by H.W. Pontin via Rail Photo Service that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in July of 1940. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6843 and an "I" Class (2-10-0) "Decapod" whose road number is not recorded. #6843 is an M-1 (4-8-2) "Mountain" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during September of 1926 and retired in March of 1957 after 31 years of faithful service. In this context, they're passing the Kittanning Point Station with a manifest freight train that's about to round the Curve on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. Prominent here is an unidentified Pennsylvania Railroad "I" Class (2-10-0) "Decapod" steam locomotive serving as a tail-end helper for a mixed-cargo freight train that's rounding the Curve on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West.
