Viewing Album: Northeast WI, Summer 2021
By:
T. P. Bruss
Dates:
6/20/2021 - 9/21/2021
Album Info:
Most, if not all, of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the summer of 2021, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

CN 9524
Description:
A CN local prepares to spot a centerbeam flatcar on the team track at the former SOO yard at Appleton, WI, on 23 Jun. '21. A Warehouse Specialists, Inc., facility stands to the right. It used to periodically receive boxcars; I haven't seen any there since '14.

CN 9524
Description:
A CN local switches Presto Products, 670 N. Perkins St., Appleton, WI (physically located in Town of Grand Chute) adjacent to the former SOO yard at Appleton, WI, on 23 Jun. '21. The station sign can be seen to the left of the locomotive. The depot stood a few blocks to the east, on a long spur that ran from the main line and along W. College Ave. into downtown Appleton. The depot was razed in 1970 and the spur was pulled up a decade or two after that (although the spur is still depicted on CN's interactive system map on their website). The main line forms the border between the Town of Grand Chute and the City of Appleton for this portion of that often ridiculously convoluted border. The facility partially visible to the right, currently home to Byproduct Recycling, has a pair of indoor spurs, but the turnout which once connected those spurs to the active rails is absent.

CN 9524
Description:
A CN local parallels the Newberry Trail (originally Newberry St.), and prepares to cross it, as it descends the grade into 'The Flats' with 11 cars via the former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI, on 24 Jun. '21. Local was headed back to the yard at Appleton Junction after working Kimberly and Combined Locks. Over the past several years, I have notice that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. However, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton is simply ‘The Flats.’ Many years ago it was referred to 'The Water Power.'

GTW 4921
Description:
A CN local crosses Stroebe Rd. as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI, on 24 Jun. '21. Local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). The former SOO rails, also in use by CN, run parallel in the background. The Great Northern Corp. facility is partially visible in the background. They have a spur, but have not received rail service for quite a while. The turnout connecting their spur to the main line was torn out last year.

Description:
A CN container train approaches Kampo Rd. as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI, on 24 Jun. '21. Train had two locomotives, CN 3043 pulling, as well as CN 2851 mid-train. A remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding, runs parallel to the right. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 dominate the background. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished.

Description:
A CN through freight approaches the W. Bell St. overpass as it heads northeast with 68 cars via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI, on 27 Jun. '21. Neenah's Southpark Industrial Center (industrial park is too plebeian for oft ostentatious Neenah) is partially visible in the background to the left. A remnant of the C&NW main line runs parallel on the other side of the tree line to the left of the train. The yellow silo in the background belongs to American Colloid Co., 901 Acco Ave., an active rail customer. The Hwy. G overpass can be seen in the background to the right.

Description:
A CN local parallels Ehlers Rd. as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI, (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 3 Jul. '21. Local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna and is about to transition to the former C&NW rails. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. It sure was nice of the railroad to complete some much-needed brush clearing along the tracks here so that train nuts like me can capture better views of their trains.

GTW 4934 and SOO 736
Description:
A CN local passes SOO 736 while traversing Telulah Park as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI, on 5 Jul. '21. The local was returning from Kimberly and Combined Locks. SOO 736 was donated to the City by John Mason Balliet. He also paid for construction of a temporary spur off the branch line to get the locomotive into the park, as well as a fence erected later to deter vandals. The locomotive arrived on 14 Nov. '59. When asked why he did it, he said, "so that children would know what [a steam engine] looked like." He owned an insurance agency, but railroads were a hobby. He served as a director for Missouri Pacific, Michigan Central, Lake Erie & Eastern, and Pittsburgh & Lake Erie railroads.

IC 9607
Description:
A CN local passes the former C&NW depot at Kaukauna, WI, on 28 Aug. '21. The depot was built in 1947 at the intersection of Depot St. and Draper St., to replace the old, wooden depot. Designed in the Art Moderne style, it originally had flat roofs. The current, gabled roofs were added at some point after 1983. It was once known as the north side depot, as opposed to the former MLS&W south side depot. That large, ornate depot disappeared many years ago.

CN 3040, et al.
Description:
A CN container/autorack train parallels Broad St., passes the former C&NW depot, and approaches Washington Ave. as it heads south with 119 container cars and 24 autoracks at Oshkosh, WI, on 6 Sep. '21. Built by the Chicago firm of Clark & Fuller in 1884 at a cost $15,000, the depot opened on 1 Dec. 1884. The depot was more ornate when completed, some of its interesting architectural elements have been removed over the years. The last passenger train, the Peninsula “400,” departed on 31 Jun. ’71. The depot is currently used by Clarity Care. I used to think that this depot replaced the older MLS&W depot which stood at Warren St. and Jay St. (both streets no longer exist but the site was southwest of the intersection of Pearl Ave. and Jackson St.), because the MLS&W was a subsidiary of the C&NW. I recently learned that both roads operated independently in Oshkosh until at least 1893, when the MLS&W was completely absorbed by the C&NW. In fact, the MLS&W also built a new stone depot in Oshkosh in 1894, to replace their older, wooden depot. Some references state, erroneously, that this depot replaced the C&NW's South Oshkosh depot. However, the C&NW operated both depots for years after this one was completed.

Title:
CN 4775
Description:
A CN local crosses W. Spencer St. as it returns to the former C&NW yard from the former SOO yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 17 Sep. '21. The track partially visible in the foreground was once the MLS&W main line, now it is the north leg of the wye. An old caboose is displayed to the left. It is painted as RI 17177 or CRIP 17177. Some references claim it was not their caboose, but MILW. The W. College Ave. overpass is partially visible in the background. The facility partially visible to the right was occupied by WOW Logistics and PODS Self-Storage, 1840 W. Spencer St., Appleton, WI. The WOW Logistics sign notes that the facility is for lease, I haven't noticed any PODS activity lately either. The facility has a spur which has not been used for quite a while.
