Bridges
Title:  Bridges
Description:  Just east of the depot at Schriever, Louisiana the main line of the SUNSET ROUTE crosses over Bayou Terrebonne and under Louisiana Highway 20. The bayou bridge and overhead signal were destroyed on 7 February 1984, when four locomotives and 50 cars on eastbound train HOSBY-HOSOY derailed here. The southbound lanes of the highway bridge ended up on top of the train's second car. Rail service was restored in three days by replacing the bayou bridge with three large culverts. Fixing the highway bridge took a little longer!

Eastbound Sunset
Title:  Eastbound Sunset
Description:  The eastbound SUNSET passes through the Berwick Bay lift bridge behind P30CH units 704 and 703. The big vertical lift span was installed in 1971 and eliminated the use of a swing span near the Berwick end of the bridge, partially visible on the left. The new centrally-located channel opening greatly reduced the frequency of vessels hitting the bridge.

Eastbound Sunset
Title:  Eastbound Sunset
Description:  The eastbound SUNSET rolls off of the Espee's Berwick Bay bridge and into Morgan City with P30CH's 704 and 703 and seven cars. At one time fishing boats would have filled the docks here; but by this time, almost all of these had been replaced with offshore support vessels such as the SUGAR PLUM and its sisters. A railroad siding once ran along Berwick Bay in the open area on the left.

Hotel Ponder
Title:  Hotel Ponder
Description:  The HOTEL PONDER was built in the small town of Amite, Louisiana in 1947, just down Central Avenue from the Illinois Central depot. Amite is the seat of Tangipahoa Parish, which probably explained the need for such an imposing structure in a town of this size. As of 2006 the hotel is still in business, so you can get a room overlooking the main line of the Canadian National; but you won't see nearly as many train as you could when the hotel opened!

Seaboard System Building
Title:  Seaboard System Building
Description:  This building was opened as the Louisville & Nashville passenger station at Mobile, Alabama in 1955, and a few years later the Mobile Division officers, dispatchers and other personnel moved in on the second floor. This building was just across the tracks from the previous station and division headquarters, which had been right along Mobile Bay. The last L&N passenger train stopped here on the morning of 1 May 1971, the day Amtrak began operating most of the country's passenger trains. There was no passenger service here for several years, but Amtrak subsequently used the station for the GULF COAST LIMITED, GULF BREEZE and SUNSET LIMITED. The L&N became a part of the Seaboard System in December 1982, and after CSX was formed in 1986 the railroad began transferring employees elsewhere. By the time Hurricane Katrina flooded the building in August 2005 only a few railroad employees were still occupying it. The building was subsequently condemned by the City of Mobile and razed.
