Title:  RMC 1016
Description:  RMC 1016 at Lincoln, Nebraska on June 25, 1963, photograph by Jim C. Seacrest, Chuck Zeiler collection. Jim wrote the following on the back of the print: Reade Manufacturing Compnay, Inc. weed sprayer # 1016. Looks like an ex-NYC baggage car. According to an employee, they have about four cars like this one -- and about 12 boxcar weed cars. Although it looks like a motor car, it has no traction engine and is pushed or pulled by a regular railroad engine. CB&Q yards, Lincoln, Nebr. 6-25-63

ARR 1070
Title:  ARR 1070
Description:  Alaska Railroad caboose 1070 at Kansas City, Missouri on an unknown day in April 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This car was built by Pacific Car and Foundry Co. in March 1948 and placed in service April 1949. Those COTS stickers sure are annoying. Here's a quote from the book, Show Me Katy, by Michael A. Landis, referring to ARR 1070: Alaska Railroad caboose 1070 was a long way from home as she brings up the rear of a southbound freight on the main line through Mokane. The colorful crummy was one of three Katy leased from Alaska in the early 1980's to alleviate a shortage brought on by an increase in rail traffic. Being that the Alaska Railroad is isolated from the rest of the North American system, the cars had to be delivered via barge to Seattle.

SWEPCO 88
Title:  SWEPCO 88
Description:  South Western Electric Power COmpany (SWEPCO) GE 80 tonner #88 (actual number unknown, the 88 assigned by me for classification purposes) stackes capped, at Alliance, Nebraska on May 14, 1984, Kodachrome by Jim Altman, Chuck Zeiler collection. The slide is labeled: SWEPCO (Southwestern Electric Power Co.) GE 'Super 88', Alliance, NE, 051484, one of 8 made - see p.33 in X2200S #68.

This was a mystery locomotive. I posted this photo some time ago on another web site and asked for information, and BandAfan responded as follows:

From X2200S #68, this is a GE 'Super 88', one of 8 built, 4 went to Cuba. Called Super 88 because it supposedly had twice the power of a 44 tonner, but weighed 80-82 tons, nominally. Powered by Cummins VT12 prime movers. SWEPCO unit originally Winifrede RR #12 (7/57). Sold to Diamond Shamrock as #22, 1969, to SWEPCO in 1978.

SD&AE SW8 1126
Title:  SD&AE SW8 1126
Description:  San Diego & Arizona Eastern Railway SW8 1126 at San Diego, California on February 11, 1984, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Note that in addition to the usual air horns, this unit is equipped with an air whistle. Number 1126 was built for the Southern Pacific in July 1953 (c/n 18356) and was equipped with dynamic brakes. The intention was to use the SW8's on the Northwestern Pacific, however, the NWP assignments fell to SD7's. The d/b equipped SW8's were reassigned to the Pacific Electric, where the dynamic brakes were of little use. Number 1126 was sold October 31, 1979 to Kyle Railways, assigned to the SD&AE, and in November 1984 was renumbered to 1101 and moved to Kansas.

LS&I RSD12 1804
Title:  LS&I RSD12 1804
Description:  Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad RSD12 1804 at Eagle Mills, Michigan on November 8, 1975, Kodachrome by J. H. Nixon, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built in April 1963 ( c/n 84293 ). the following is from the book, A Centennial Remembrance, by Richard T. Steinbrenner: The 1800 hp DL-702, RSD12 was, in effect, the six traction motor version of the RS11 and was up against EMD's 1750 hp SD9. However similar in details to the RS11, the RSD12 was bigger in every way. Its body length (over couplers ) was 58 ft. 1¾ in., 1 ft. 2 in. longer that the RS11, and was equipped with a 2000 gallon fuel tank. The Lake Superior & Ishpeming received two RSD12's from Alco in February 1957 ( #'s 1801 and 1802 ), and came back for another unit in November 1959 ( # 1803 ), and purchased the last RSD12 built by Alco in April 1963 ( # 1804 ). In 1972 the LS&I acquired six former C&O RSD12's and put four of them in its operational roster This gave the LS&I the distinction of operating the first , its No. 1850 and the last, its No. 1804, RSD12's built by Alco. The other two former C&O units were put on lease and saw years of service on the Utah Railway. Later, the West Tennessee Railroad acquired several of the former LS&I RSD12's.

BUDD SPV-2000
Title:  BUDD SPV-2000
Description:  BUDD SPV-2000 at a railroad trade fair on the site of IC's Central Station (demolished in 1974) on an unknown day in July 1982, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in 1977 at Budd's Troy, Michigan plant, the SPV-2000 demonstrator was powered by two 360 horsepower GM diesel engines coupled to twin disc torque converters driving the inboard axles on the Pioneer III trucks (the original design was for all axles to be driven, but that would qualify the car as a locomotive requiring a full crew). Introduced at Washington D.C. on January 18, 1978, it was planned to show at it at seven cities, but was cut short when both the MBTA and Chicago's RTA requested revenue tests. On the Chicago tests, the car failed to activate signals, which was traced back to the disc brakes. The brakes were not at fault, however, since the wheel treads were not polished by brake shoes, and a single lightweight car with less than optimum clean wheels was insufficient to shunt the low voltage signal current across the rails. Budd later developed a scrubbing device to keep the wheel treads polished. Later, problems developed with the manifolds and starters on the diesels, which were addressed by GM, but tainted the reputation of the SPV-2000. Only 24 units were sold. This particular unit was never sold to a railroad, and was cut up for scrap when Budd's Red Lion plant was demolished around 1999.

WC SD40 3068
Title:  WC SD40 3068
Description:  Wisconsin Central Oxford SD40 3068 at Cotter, Arkansas on October 28, 1990, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. It appears this locomotive was built as UP SD40 3068 around November 1966 (c/n 32420), the 15 year trust expired, this unit was sold, rebuilt and repainted in a MP-inspired paint scheme and leased back. The following is from http://utahrails.net/articles/up-leased-locos.php

In January 1989 the traffic boom was continuing, and so was UP's need for more short term locomotives. In January UP leased 10 ex NW, SP, and BN SD45's from The Oxford Group, parent company of Wisconsin Central Railroad. All ten units had been de-rated from from their as-built 3600 horsepower down to 3200 horsepower. Four were returned in June 1989 and the other 6 were retained until late August or early September 1989.

In January and March 1989 UP leased 11 ex UP and MP SD40's from Oxford. The lease was originally to expire on 15 December 1989, however on December 11th the lease was extended to 31 October 1990. These 11 units had been sold by UP to Wilson during 1988. Wilson resold them to a Wisconsin Central/Oxford Group joint venture, along with 3 other UP and MP SD40's. Prior to their arrival on UP, all were rebuilt by Wilson and painted dark blue with a white "WC" in a red circle on the cab side. The former UP units kept their UP 3000 class number and the former MP units had 1000 added to their MP 3000 class number making them the 4000 class.

Title:  HL GP40 3520
Description:  Helm Leasing GP40 3520 at Bensenville, Illinois on June 2, 1987, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 3520 was built in August 1970 ( c/n 36827 ) as WP 3520, then HL 3520, then CMNW 3003, then WC 3003. I'm not sure if these were leased by the Milwaukee Road or the SOO. The SOO assumed control of the Milwaukee Road on January 1, 1986.

WM GP40-2 4370
Title:  WM GP40-2 4370
Description:  Western Maryland GP40-2 4370 at Grand Rapids, Michigan on June 14, 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was a Chessie Safety Express trip from Chicago to Grand Rapids and return, or so I believe. I did not keep notes or mark the slides as I was trying to impress a new girlfriend that I was not a foamer. That didn't work, and I'm guessing at the location based on the date stamp on the slide and a photo in Trains Magazine mentioning this trip. If the location is wrong, please leave a Comment and I will correct, thanks.

I was on a business trip and this was shot with the company camera, so I didn't mark the slide correctly. Tom Beckett commented: That's Long Island City. The station to the right of the G is LIRR Hunterspoint Avenue.

CBQZ 5530
Title:  CBQZ 5530
Description:  CBQZ 5530 at a construction site near Arlington Heights, Illinois on September 21, 1987, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I took careful measurements and drew a scale plan. I'll find it and scan it. At the time my plan was to build a HO scale model, and I had it half-built, but discovered a flaw in my technique (the sides warped), and never finished the model.
