SSW 6681 |
Description: |
An estbound Espee train -- probably the HOSOM -- nears the end of its journey from Houston to New Orleans as it approaches Avondale Yard. The motive power was a pair of GP35's and GP49 4604, and the appearance of Cotton Belt 6681 -- the highest numbered SP/SSW GP35 -- makes quite a contrast with that of Southern 2670! The train had 151 cars and SP caboose 1903. |

Description: |
Three trains are on the west end of the Norfolk Southern's BACK BELT at Shrewsbury Road. Cotton Belt 8040 and Espee 8026 are on a westbound American President Companies (APC) stack train. These cars arrived from Atlanta on NS train No. 219 and are bound for Long Beach as SP train AVAXT. On the next track is KCS caboose 342 on KCS train No. 55. The KCS has just delivered the train to the NS, and it is on its way to the NS Oliver yard. On the right is KCS train No. 140, the BATON ROUGE TURN, departing from that railroad's West Yard. No. 140 has GP30's 4112, 4103, 4119 and 4106, 48 cars, and caboose 348; but one of the geeps will be set out up the road for use as a switch engine. The Espee train is waiting for a route through East Bridge Junction and onto the Huey P. Long Bridge, while KCS No. 140 needs to get onto the Illinois Central. Since 1985 KCS trains have used trackage rights over the IC to enter and leave New Orleans. |

SP S4 1811 |
Description: |
Southern Pacific S4 1811 was one of two Alco switchers parked outside the railroad's office in Gretna, Louisiana. This unit had been built in 1951 as SP 1483 and it was traded-in to General Electric in 1972. Up until the opening of the Huey P. Long Bridge in December, Gretna had been on the main line of the SUNSET ROUTE, but after that it was just an industrial branch. The tall building in the background was the Jefferson Parish Court House. (approximate day and month) |

SP First 241 |
Description: |
The head-end brakeman on westbound Espee train First 241 was poised to snag his orders at the Raceland Junction train order office, as a couple of young railfans and their mom looked on. These folks had come out to see Amtrak's TRANSCONTINENTAL STEAM EXCURSION, with FREEDOM TRAIN 4449, which had just passed a few minutes earlier. The locomotives on First 241 were U33C's 8659 and 8664, along with SD45 9095. Later in the day - at Lacasine, Louisiana - First 241 would overtake the excursion train and the 9095 would be cut in behind the 4449 because of a problem with the steam engine. The tracks in the foreground are the beginning of the Lockport Branch. |

Amtrak Sunset |
Description: |
Cotton Belt SD45 8976 - with UP-style number boards - and Amtrak's TRIPLE NICKEL - SDP40F 555 - were powering train No. 1, the westbound SUNSET, away from Carrollton Junction on the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal WESTERN CONNECTION. The right-of-way in the foreground had been the inbound track for IC, KCS, MP, SP and T&P trains, but this was removed in 1969. U.S. Highway 61 was on the other side of No. 1. |
