Album Info:BNSF's Seattle Sub is one of the most interesting rail lines in the US. It is an important corridor for freight and passengers heading to and from the Pacific Northwest. From Seattle, trains to Tacoma, Vancouver, Pasco, Portland, Eugene, Sacramento, Oakland, Fresno, and Los Angeles must use the Seattle Sub on the first leg of their journey. The line runs from the King Street Station in downtown Seattle to Portland, Oregon. The scenery on the line is very picturesque, with urban settings, high-speed trains, rural countrysides, and moderate grades all present on this line. Trains that use the line usually originate or terminate at BNSF or Union Pacific yards in Seattle, South Seattle, Auburn, Tacoma, Kalama, and Kelso. While BNSF owns the line, Union Pacific has trackage rights over the whole line from their Argo Yard in Seattle to Portland. Along with upwards of 30 freight trains per day, dozens of passenger trains use the line as well. Sound Transit operates Sounder commuter trains between Seattle and Lakewood, and Amtrak Cascades and Coast Starlight trains use the entirety of the line on their runs to Eugene and Los Angeles respectively. Northbound Starlight at Sunset
Title:  Northbound Starlight at Sunset
Description:  With a blast from the horn and wave from the engineer, the northbound Coast Starlight flies through Tukwila as the last rays of sunset reflect on the trees. Hot on the heels of the last freight train, the train is running around an hour late, but making good time on the final 20 minutes of its 35 hour journey. Todays consist is made up of P42DCs 154 and 189, followed by a typical consist of a Viewliner baggage car, followed by 8 Superliner passenger cars. In the distance is the headlight of a BNSF local, waiting for the Starlight to clear.

Description:  A high green beckons an Amtrak train southbound. The cantilever signal bridge is at the north end of the Glacier Park control point, where a set of left-hand crossovers connect the three main tracks. The train waiting to pass under the signal bridge is Amtrak Cascades #505 Southbound, led by NPCU 90250, a rebuilt F40PHR.

Description:  The signals at the Glacier Park control point shine red as a northbound manifest approaches. Glacier Park protects a set of crossovers allowing southbounds on track one to cross to track three. This is used by local trains accessing the Glacier Park Auto Loading Facility, an industry that links to the mainline just south of the crossovers. The manifest is led by ES44C4 7098.

The train is approaching the Tukwila Sounder station, and originated from the BNSF Orillia Auto Facility just a mile south of the station. These cars will likely end up in Balmer Yard north of downtown Seattle. After waiting for the northbound Amtrak to pass, the train leaves the industrial trackage, and comes to a stop just south of the station.

Description:  Having been cut off from its train, BNSF 3873 shoves into an engine track with the rest of its consist. The big GEs will be refueed here before being placed on the next intermodal out of town. South Seattle has no dedicated engine terminal, and these engines will be fueled the next time the fuel truck makes its rounds. After 3873 clears, another set of engines will back into the yard to couple onto an outbound train.

The Seagull Departs
Title:  The Seagull Departs
Description:  Union Pacific 7345 leads the "Seagull" out of South Seattle and towards Tukwila late in the day. The AC45CCTE is leading O-SEGL, a daily train that departs UP's Argo Yard in Seattle and runs south and east to Gilliam County, Oregon. O-SEGL is not so much known for its route, but for its cargo. This train carries around 300 containers of contaminated soil, refuse, and construction debris from the Pacific Northwest to regional landfills south of Arlington, Oregon. Along with BNSF's H-EVEROO and H-INBROO (trash trains from Everett and Interbay to Roosevelt, Washington), the "Seagull" is one of the most well-known freight trains of the Pacific Northwest.

Description:  UP 6293 is the second unit on the southbound "Seagull" as it rolls through South Seattle Yard. The train will soon pass through a series of crossovers that will put the southbound on the mainline for Portland. 6293 is an ex-Southern Pacific AC4400CW, built in 1995, just before the UP-SP buyout. 6293 kept its Bloody Nose paint until early in the 2000s, but was repainted into Armour Yellow by 2003. Visible on the left are the radiator fins of BNSF 5832, and in the right background are more BNSF units at the South Seattle engine tracks.
